![]() Smith is the kind of artist who does not need music in the background, as his voice is all of the music. With his voice songs like “I’ve Told You Now,” “Like I Can” and “Life Support” can truly relax the soul. Smith’s album could put the most insomnia racked bitter old man to sleep and I mean that in the best way possible. A song of an unfaithful partner is not something new, but Smith’s beautiful vocal range makes him versatile in a way that is new in today’s pop culture. I absolutely loved the song “Leave Your Lover,” though it did remind me of Frank Ocean’s song, “Thinking Bout You.” It was similar not because they sound the same, but because both songs do a great job of not saying if it is directed to a man or a woman (not that it matters.) “I’m Not the Only One” is a song that unfortunately many people can relate to. This album is proof that Sam Smith cannot be a one hit or few hit wonder, and I’d put money on that. If you have not heard “Stay With Me” yet then I highly recommend you crawl from under your rock and listen to this man’s song. With his song “Good Thing,” I am convinced Smith is a great thing. If nothing good lasts forever, I hope at least great things do. However, with his gloriously fantastic voice, I will pretend to believe anything Sam Smith sings. Sam Smith tries to convince listeners that he is in it because he loves it, with the first song of his 2014 album “Money on My Mind.” This radio friendly song with its upbeat tempo and repeated phrase of “money on my mind,” does not make his idea too believable. Sam Smith is big for a reason, and the expectation attributed to him doesn’t allow In The Lonely Hour to buckle underneath it.Artists either want you to think they are in the music industry because it is their passion or because they want money and the fame. There won’t be any need for peering too long at it, or searching in the bottom drawer for hidden euphemistic connotations. It’s a collection of singles rather than a conceptual and cohesive artwork with encircling narratives. Similarly to Hurts, Smith’s power comes from the luxuriance and fulsome nature of his sound. Where the album becomes overwhelming is certainly up for debate. ![]() ![]() The vocals on Life Support and Not In That Way are suspenseful, showing his spiritual voice as the centre of attention and the beat as secondary. Whilst debut single Money On My Mind stands out against its melancholic counterparts, Like I Can is a more upbeat chanson about Smith expressing his love for someone with an infectious chorus that takes you to a distant place of amorous exuberance. Stay With Me takes something seedy and turns it in to a beautiful tale of longing for more. Smith’s unlucky in love story is prevalent in Leave Your Lover, a ballad so self explanatory, he wishes the one he has fallen in love with would leave their love for him, with the desperation well recollected in the vocal. The autobiographical-nature is what makes it more endearing forcing you to feel his emotions. There’s a real sense of urgency throughout the record, trying to desperately express what it is he’s wanting to tell his lover. You can argue that less is more, but when you opt for emphatic emotional statements, you want heart-tugging hooks and gospel choirs. It’s polished hi-fi.Įvery line is delivered with falsetto and vibrato, the kind of astral string anthemry associated with end-credits. Sam Smith uses it well, with conviction and fierceness, often shirking in to a slight flirt with dance. It’s a genre that is rendered hackneyed and overused, with many fingers dabbling in the faux-disco, retro-croon of its ‘90s peak, but it works for most. ![]() The cited colure has swallowed Smith, and spat him back out with such aplomb and cleft his heart in twain can he rise forth and prove he’ll not succumb to expectation? Is his eagerly awaited debut LP In The Lonely Hour able to parallel itself against his rise to stardom? Well, like men in general, it arrives with so much baggage in every sense bar the literal one (it’s only a CD). Yet, you only know this once you feel loved the title of Sam Smith’s album would suggest that it is supposedly written about a person who has never felt loved.Īt first, his soothing semblance is a lot to take in so a little patience is required when embarking on Smith’s trademark soul infused pop excursion for the first time. What is the true meaning of love? Love is chemistry.
